Balotra (Rajasthan), — A major fire broke out at the HPCL Rajasthan Refinery in Pachpadra on Monday, triggering concerns over industrial safety and emergency preparedness at one of the country’s key energy projects.
According to initial reports, the fire started in one of the refinery units due to a suspected technical fault and quickly spread, sending thick smoke across the surrounding areas. Fire brigade and disaster management teams rushed to the site and brought the blaze under control after several hours. No casualties have been reported so far.
The incident also led to the cancellation of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s scheduled visit to the refinery, where he was expected to inaugurate a key unit. Officials cited safety concerns and the prevailing situation for the decision.
Rajasthan Chief Minister Bhajan Lal Sharma has ordered a detailed inquiry into the incident and is expected to visit the site. The state government has assured that the cause of the fire will be thoroughly investigated and accountability will be fixed.
The Pachpadra refinery, a major project with an investment of around ₹80,000 crore, plays a crucial role in the region’s industrial development. The incident has, however, highlighted the need for stricter safety protocols, regular audits, and stronger emergency response systems in such high-risk facilities.
Authorities are also likely to assess the environmental impact of the fire, particularly on air quality in the surrounding areas.
