####High-Risk Pregnancy Managed Successfully: Multi-Department Team at Geetanjali Saves Woman’s Life

Udaipur — In a remarkable example of medical expertise and teamwork, doctors at Geetanjali Medical College and Hospital successfully saved the life of a woman suffering from a highly complex and high-risk pregnancy. The case was managed through the coordinated efforts of five key departments—Gynecology, Gastroenterology, Interventional Radiology, ICU, and Anesthesiology.

According to Dr. Nalini Sharma, a specialist in Obstetrics and Gynecology, the patient was admitted during a five-month IVF twin pregnancy complicated by multiple life-threatening conditions, including severe hypertension, liver dysfunction, placenta previa, and Molar Pregnancy. Despite being only five months pregnant, her abdomen had enlarged to the size of a full-term pregnancy due to one normal fetus and another abnormal molar component.

The patient experienced recurrent bleeding caused by the molar pregnancy, prompting doctors to take the difficult but necessary decision to terminate the pregnancy in order to save her life.

⚕️ Critical Challenges and Advanced Intervention

Doctors had already anticipated severe Postpartum Hemorrhage (PPH) due to multiple risk factors, including pre-eclampsia, liver issues, placenta previa, and abnormal uterine enlargement.

The delivery was performed through suction evacuation without surgery by Dr. Sharma and the anesthesia team led by Dr. Akshay Toshniwal. However, when heavy bleeding could not be fully controlled even after medications and transfusion of 17 blood components, the pre-prepared interventional radiology team stepped in.

Led by Dr. Tanya Dixit, the team performed a uterine artery embolization—a minimally invasive procedure in which a catheter is inserted through the femoral artery to block blood flow to the uterus using tiny particles under X-ray guidance. This proved crucial in controlling the hemorrhage and saving both the patient’s life and uterus.

🏥 Intensive Care and Multidisciplinary Support

Post-procedure, the patient was closely monitored in the ICU under the supervision of Dr. Sanjay Paliwal for two days. Liver-related complications were managed by Dr. Kartikeya Mathur, who focused on controlling inflammation and identifying the underlying cause while stabilizing the patient.

The case posed a serious risk of liver failure, hysterectomy, and even death, but timely intervention and coordinated teamwork helped avert all major complications.

👩‍⚕️ Team Effort and Future Care

The successful outcome was achieved under the leadership of Dr. Nalini Sharma, with key contributions from Dr. Farheen Sheikh, Dr. Tehenaaz, OT in-charge Jayashree, and ward in-charge Lokesh.

Given the high risk of developing trophoblastic cancer after molar pregnancy, the patient will remain under close follow-up for one year under the guidance of Dr. Ankit Agrawal.

This case stands as a powerful testament to how advanced medical technology, preparedness, and seamless teamwork can save lives even in the most critical situations.
