Maternal Health to Be Secured Through Aviation Safety Model

Udaipur: Following reports of the incident at Government Medical College Kota and in compliance with clear directives received from the state government, an urgent meeting was held at the administrative building of Ravindranath Tagore Medical College. The meeting was chaired by Principal and Controller Dr. Rahul Jain and attended by superintendents and heads of departments from all hospitals affiliated with RNT Medical College.

Aviation Safety Model: A New Direction in Healthcare
During the meeting, Superintendent of the Super Specialty Hospital Dr. Vipin Mathur delivered a detailed presentation explaining how the aviation industry achieved world-class safety standards by learning from its errors. He emphasized that a similar aviation safety model should now be implemented in maternal healthcare.

Referring to the “Swiss Cheese Model,” he explained that several small system failures together can lead to major accidents, which can only be prevented through multiple layers of safety mechanisms.

Key Decisions Taken During the Meeting
A detailed audit of every death occurring in each hospital department will be conducted, monitored by a dedicated committee.

Specific standards for maternal and child safety will be established and shared publicly.

Experts from other government medical colleges will inspect the women’s hospital to identify and rectify shortcomings.

Efforts will be made to invite doctors from AIIMS Jodhpur for an inspection of the women’s hospital.

Regular mock drills for emergency situations such as Code Blue and obstetric hemorrhage will be conducted across all departments.

The administration proposed the installation of digital dashboards for real-time monitoring of infection rates and protocol compliance.

All ICUs will be equipped with bedside Point-of-Care testing facilities including ABG, lactate tests, ECG, Echo, and USG.

In view of the increasing patient load at Pannadhay Women’s Hospital, instructions were issued to increase the number of OPD counters.

A five-member committee under the chairmanship of Additional Principal Dr. Vijay Gupta has been formed. The committee, coordinated by Superintendent Dr. R. L. Suman, will inspect all ICUs, labor rooms, operation theatres, and wards, and submit recommendations for improvement within two days to prevent such incidents in the future.

Principal’s Statement
Dr. Rahul Jain stated that the institution is fully committed to ensuring that an incident like the one at Kota Government Medical College is never repeated here. He said that the focus would now shift from individual heroism to building safer systems.

“We have decided to move away from a culture of blame and adopt a culture of learning. Reporting every near-miss incident will now be mandatory so that major disasters can be prevented in advance,” he said.

Superintendent’s Remarks
The superintendent emphasized the need to break hierarchical barriers in healthcare. Nurses and junior doctors will be empowered to report any safety lapse immediately and without fear.

He further stated that maternal death reviews would no longer remain a mere formality but would now be based on Root Cause Analysis.

The meeting saw active participation from Additional Principal Dr. Vijay Gupta, Maharana Bhupal Hospital Superintendent Dr. R.L. Suman, Head of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology Dr. Sangeeta Sen, along with heads of all departments.
