JOHANNESBURG, South Africa: Smarter Mobility Africa 2025 opened with a dynamic keynote session, bringing together leaders from across the continent to explore how innovative transport solutions can shape cities and economies. The event emphasized collaboration, technology, and sustainable mobility as key drivers for Africa’s future.

Ben Pullen, Group Director Mobility at VUKA Group, highlighted the demanding nature of the transport sector, stating, “Transport is not just about moving people and goods; it’s about connecting communities and driving economic growth.” The session acknowledged the long hours and complex political dynamics professionals face, underlining the sector’s vital role in development.

Mmatshikhidi Rebecca Phala, National Spokesperson for SANTACO, emphasized the minibus taxi industry’s commitment to a smarter, greener, and safer future. She described mobility as “access, dignity, and daily service to the nation,” while addressing challenges like violence and regulation. Tshepo Kgobe of Gautrain praised SANTACO’s collaborative approach, highlighting the importance of public-private partnerships in transforming informal transport networks.

The event showcased innovative solutions, including Visa’s ticketing systems for streamlined public transport payments and Johannesburg Road Agency’s IoT integration, enabling smarter, data-driven urban planning. Dominic Wilhelm, Executive Director of The Global Trust Project, stressed that trust among stakeholders is crucial for effective collaboration and sustainable mobility.

The keynote concluded with a call to action for increased investment in digital infrastructure, data analytics, and cross-sector partnerships, providing a roadmap for Africa’s transport transformation.
