Global politics has entered a new, highly controversial and potentially historic phase. On the night of January 3, 2026, the United States launched a large-scale military operation on Caracas, the capital of Venezuela, and within just thirty minutes arrested President Nicolás Maduro and his wife Cilia Flores. This dramatic operation has ignited intense and multi-layered debate across the world.
On one side, the action is being hailed as a victory of justice over dictatorship, an end to authoritarian rule, and a decisive step toward restoring democracy. On the other, it is being condemned as a blatant violation of international law, an assault on national sovereignty, and a classic example of imperialist intervention.
At first glance, the US attack on Venezuela and the arrest of President Maduro appears to be a complex geopolitical event with far-reaching consequences. Its impact will extend beyond Venezuela’s future to affect global power balance, the credibility of international law, regional stability, the sovereignty of developing nations, and the precedent of unilateral actions by powerful states. Countries like India must view this episode with caution, draw diplomatic lessons, and further strengthen their defence, security, and foreign policy strategies.
Maduro and his wife were taken to the United States and placed in New York’s Metropolitan Detention Center, where they face charges related to narco-terrorism, drug trafficking, and arms smuggling. US President Donald Trump described the operation as a success, asserting that Maduro was deeply involved in narcotics trafficking and narco-terror networks. These allegations are not new—charges were filed in US courts as early as 2020, and a reward had been announced for Maduro’s capture. According to Washington, the operation was part of a broader campaign against narco-terrorism.
Supporters of the move argue that Maduro’s regime was oppressive and responsible for Venezuela’s prolonged economic collapse, food shortages, and widespread human rights violations. Millions of Venezuelans were forced to flee the country. From this perspective, Maduro’s arrest is seen as a potential gateway to democratic restoration.
However, critics strongly disagree. They argue that under the United Nations Charter, an attack on a sovereign nation is legal only in cases of self-defence or with approval from the UN Security Council—neither of which applied here. Many believe the real motive behind the operation was control over Venezuela’s vast oil resources. In that sense, the episode resembles a “Ravana-like abduction for oil”, rather than a principled pursuit of justice.
India has expressed deep concern over the developments and urged restraint and dialogue. The Ministry of External Affairs reaffirmed India’s commitment to sovereignty and non-intervention, reflecting a cautious and principled diplomatic stance.
Ultimately, this action presents a profound moral and legal dilemma. While Maduro’s governance was undeniably authoritarian, the method adopted by the United States appears to undermine international legal norms. From a strict legal standpoint, the operation may be deemed unlawful; from a security perspective, some may argue it was strategically necessary.
For India and other developing nations, this episode serves as a warning and a lesson—highlighting the fragile nature of international rules when confronted with raw power. Vigilance, strategic autonomy, and a robust foreign policy framework are more essential than ever in an increasingly unpredictable global order.
