Udaipur: The Department of Plastic Surgery at Geetanjali Hospital, Udaipur, has achieved a significant milestone in advanced reconstructive surgery, successfully performing multiple complex free-flap reconstruction procedures over the past year for challenging defects involving the head and neck as well as the lower limbs.

The procedures were successfully carried out by Professor Dr. Ashish Singhal under the guidance of Dr. Ashutosh Soni, Professor and Head of the Department of Plastic Surgery. The patients have demonstrated encouraging and satisfactory clinical outcomes following the procedures.

Free-flap reconstruction is a highly specialized microsurgical technique in which tissue is harvested from one part of the body along with its blood supply and transferred to another area requiring reconstruction. The technique demands exceptional microsurgical precision to reconnect tiny blood vessels and establish adequate blood circulation in the transplanted tissue.

Over the past year, the department has performed several free-flap reconstructions involving complex defects of the lip, tongue, cheek and mandible, along with challenging soft-tissue defects of the hands and legs. The procedures were aimed at providing reliable tissue coverage while achieving better structural and functional reconstruction of the affected areas.

Restoring Function Along With Form

Reconstruction following head and neck cancer is particularly challenging as these regions are closely associated with vital functions such as speech, swallowing, chewing and facial appearance. Through advanced free-flap procedures, the team has reconstructed complex defects involving structures such as the tongue, cheek, lips and jaw, with the objective of restoring both function and appearance.

The department has also undertaken free-flap reconstruction for complex soft-tissue defects of the limbs. Such advanced procedures can provide reliable coverage for large and difficult wounds and may play an important role in limb preservation and maintaining functional outcomes.

The achievement highlights the department’s growing expertise in microsurgical and reconstructive plastic surgery and reflects its capability to manage complex cases requiring advanced tissue reconstruction.

Comprehensive Plastic & Reconstructive Surgical Care

The Department of Plastic Surgery at Geetanjali Hospital provides a wide range of procedures, from routine to highly complex plastic, reconstructive and cosmetic surgeries. These include hand surgery, trauma reconstruction, post-cancer reconstruction, maxillofacial surgery, burns and burn reconstruction, liposuction, rhinoplasty and other specialized procedures.

With advanced microsurgical expertise and a multidisciplinary approach, the department continues to expand its capabilities in complex reconstruction, helping patients regain function, structural integrity and quality of life following major injuries, cancer surgery and other challenging conditions.
