Pelotherapy has been considered beneficial to life by Unani scholars since ancient times : Dr. Liyaqat Ali Mansury

This therapy was considered part of natural and traditional Unani medicine. However, it should not be considered a substitute for the guidance of an Unani physician. The main treatment in Unani medicine, which involves immersing the body in soil or mud, is called soil therapy, mud therapy, clay therapy, or pelotherapy. It is a natural healing method that involves applying a paste of clean, mineral-rich mud to the skin. Mud therapy is suitable for people of all ages and can benefit older adults. Clean and fertile mud is first tested for purity, mineral content, and microbial safety to ensure safety and efficacy beyond traditional spa applications.

The following soils are used__
1. Black mud__ Rich in minerals, black mud is widely used for its therapeutic benefits.  It is excellent for improving blood circulation, reducing joint pain, and promoting skin health.
2. Fuller's Earth (Multani Mitti)__This type of clay is commonly used in skin care due to its oil-absorbing and cleansing properties. It helps heal acne, brighten skin, and reduce inflammation.
3. Clay Mud (Mud)__Mud made from clay is known for its detoxifying properties. It is effective in removing toxins from the body, tightening the skin, and calming inflammation.

Various Mud Therapy Techniques__
1. Mud Packs__Mud packs are applied to specific areas of the body, such as the face, eyes, and abdomen, to relieve headaches, improve skin health, and aid digestion.
2. Mud Baths__Mud baths involve immersing the entire body in therapeutic mud, which deeply cleanses, soothes, and nourishes the skin.
 3. Mud Wraps__ Mud wraps involve covering the body with a layer of mud, which tones the skin, removes excess oil, and provides relief.

The science behind mud therapy and how does it work?__
Mud has a high heat retention capacity, making it effective in increasing blood circulation, relieving pain, and reducing inflammation. The minerals in the mud are absorbed into the skin, nourishing the body from within. Mud contains essential minerals that penetrate the skin and promote natural healing. Mud contains the following key elements__
1. Magnesium – Reduces stress and muscle tension.
2. Silica – Increases skin elasticity and reduces signs of aging.
3. Calcium – Strengthens bones and improves blood circulation.
4. Iron – Helps transport oxygen and increases energy levels.
 5. Sodium and Potassium – Maintains water content in the body and improves the functioning of cells.

Key Benefits and Uses of Mud Therapy__
1. Pain and Inflammation Relief__By balancing and cooling the body temperature, it is effective in reducing inflammation, joint pain, muscle stiffness, and symptoms of arthritis and gout. The minerals in mud and its heat-retaining capacity are beneficial for joint pain, spondylitis, and rheumatoid arthritis.
2. Detoxification__This mud therapy absorbs toxins and excess oil from the skin, cleansing the skin and purifying the internal organs. It is very effective in removing environmental pollutants from the body and helps speed up metabolism.
3. Skin Health__This mud therapy moisturizes and nourishes the skin, reducing acne, blemishes, and dryness. Regular use results in radiant and youthful skin. It promotes the body's natural healing process by removing impurities and rejuvenating the skin and organs.  Mud application helps alleviate skin ailments and enhances skin.
4. Improves Digestion__ Applying a mud bandage to the abdomen can provide immediate relief from constipation, gas, and stomach pain.
5. Stress and Anxiety__ This therapy relaxes the mind and calms the nervous system, alleviates mental fatigue, and improves overall health.
6. Improves Blood Circulation__ By increasing blood flow, it helps ensure better oxygen delivery to tissues. It also helps maintain blood pressure at the right level.

Method of Treatment__
1. Soil Selection__ Use clean, pebble-free, and fertile soil, or soil taken from 10 cm below the ground.
2. Paste Preparation__ Soak the mud in water to form a thick paste.

Method of Application__ Apply this paste in a 1-2-inch layer to the affected area (stomach, joint, or entire body).  After applying the paste, the skin should be cleansed and rinsed with warm water for 5-10 minutes. The patient should then rest for 20-45 minutes. Herbal tea should be offered during this rest.

How often and when should mud therapy be performed?__
This therapy is tailored to the season. Pitta-balancing (cool) mud treatments are suitable for summer, while Kapha-balancing (hot) mud treatments are beneficial for winter health. The frequency of sessions depends on body constitution, health goals, and the severity of the condition. Some individuals benefit from weekly sessions during a specific retreat or therapeutic program; others may find sessions once every two weeks or once a month sufficient for continued support.

Precautions after a mud therapy session__
Strenuous exercise, exposure to cold environments, and heavy meals should be avoided for 2-4 hours after therapy. Rest and adequate hydration promote tissue recovery after treatment.

Caution__This is a natural and traditional Unani treatment, but for any serious health problem, consult a Unani specialist. While mud therapy is generally safe, it should not be used in cases of high fever, severe dehydration, open wounds, or certain blood vessel problems. Individuals with Vata imbalances may experience increased skin dryness after treatment and may require oil-based treatments. Pregnant women and those sensitive to heat should avoid it.
