Unregulated Boating Raises Safety, Environmental Concerns

Udaipur’s lakes are facing growing threats as unchecked boating activities continue to disturb ecological balance and public safety. This concern was strongly raised during a “Lake Dialogue” held on Sunday, where experts highlighted the urgent need for regulation and scientific management.

Lake expert Dr. Anil Mehta stated that the number of boats and speedboats has increased significantly, but there is no standard operating protocol governing their movement. There are no fixed routes for navigation, and critical safety measures such as boat fitness checks, life jackets, trained staff, or passenger limits are often ignored. Due to these lapses, boating in the lakes has turned into a “high-risk activity.”

Former Lake Development Authority member Tej Shankar Paliwal pointed out that rising speedboat activity is causing wave-induced erosion along the banks and increasing the risk of collisions between boats. He added that boating operations continuing even after sunset violate safety norms and significantly heighten accident risks.

Environmental expert Nand Kishore Sharma emphasized that lakes are increasingly being treated only as tourism resources, while their ecological carrying capacity is being completely overlooked. This negligence, he warned, is leading to environmental degradation and posing serious threats to human life.

Social worker Vinod Kumawat highlighted that several hotels are organizing late-night events at private jetties without proper safety arrangements or official permissions, further increasing the likelihood of mishaps.

Senior citizen Drupad Singh stressed that strict monitoring and scientific lake management are essential to prevent repeated accidents in Udaipur.

Prior to the dialogue, participants also undertook a shramdaan (voluntary cleanup drive) at the Manji Temple campus, reflecting their commitment toward conservation alongside discussion.

The discussion concluded with a strong consensus that immediate regulatory intervention, safety enforcement, and ecological sensitivity are crucial to preserve Udaipur’s lakes and ensure public safety.
