Udaipur: Paras Health Udaipur has recently achieved a remarkable feat by successfully treating a rare and potentially life-threatening growing skull fracture (GSF) in a 2-year-old child. This accomplishment marks a significant milestone in pediatric neurosurgery and reinforces the hospital’s position as a center of excellence for complex pediatric care.
The child developed a pulsatile swelling on the head eight months after a minor injury. A CT scan confirmed a growing skull fracture, a rare condition seen in only 0.05% to 1.6% of pediatric head injury cases, mostly in children under three years of age. The injury had caused a tear in the dura mater—the protective membrane around the brain—allowing brain tissue and cerebrospinal fluid to protrude through the fracture, progressively enlarging it. If left untreated, such cases can lead to severe neurological complications, including paralysis and seizures.
The neurological team at Paras Health, led by Senior Consultant in Neurosurgery Dr. Ajit Singh, performed a meticulous dural repair and cranioplasty using titanium mesh and pericranium. This delicate procedure restored both the structural integrity and the functional and aesthetic aspects of the skull. The child has shown remarkable recovery and is now doing well.
Speaking on the rarity of the case, Dr. Ajit Singh said, “Treating a growing skull fracture in a 2-year-old is extremely challenging due to the patient’s small size and the precision required for dural repair and cranioplasty. Our team’s success demonstrates our commitment to advancing pediatric neurosurgery and providing world-class care in Udaipur.”
Dr. Prasoon Kumar, Facility Director at Paras Health Udaipur, added, “This successful treatment underscores the importance of early diagnosis and timely surgical intervention in rare pediatric cases. It also highlights our dedication to delivering advanced, life-saving neurosurgical care to the people of Rajasthan.”
Paras Health Udaipur continues to set benchmarks in providing specialized and compassionate healthcare. The hospital ensures that patients have access to complex neurosurgical procedures while maintaining the highest standards of clinical excellence.
