Udaipur: True politics is grounded in national interest, and history stands witness to the remarkable contributions made by countless teachers during the freedom struggle, many of whom even sacrificed their lives. Teachers are the true guardians of character, cultural legacy, and national pride in a democracy. Like dedicated gardeners, they nurture the nation with values, shaping its path of progress.
These views were expressed by Prof. Vasudev Devnani, Speaker of the Rajasthan Legislative Assembly, who served as the chief guest at the Fourth B.S. Garg Memorial Lecture Series organized by Janardan Rai Nagar Rajasthan Vidyapeeth University at the IT Auditorium, Pratapnagar. The lecture series focused on the theme “The Role of Teachers in Democracy.”
Prof. Devnani emphasized that politics must be a mission of service, not a pursuit of selfish interest, and teachers can play a decisive role in shaping this outlook. He described teachers as the “soul of the nation,” capable of providing solutions to social and national challenges through their wisdom and values.
Expressing concern over rising intolerance in public discourse, he noted that the Constitution of India upholds unity and harmony, and intolerance in any form is unacceptable. The responsibility of preparing good leaders also lies with teachers, who can guide young minds toward responsible citizenship. He also urged teachers to stay updated with modern technology to impart accurate and balanced information to students.
The ceremony began with floral tributes to Goddess Saraswati and late Prof. B.S. Garg.
Prof. Kailash Sodani, former Vice-Chancellor and Advisor to the Governor, served as the keynote speaker. He stated that teachers’ active involvement is essential for safeguarding and strengthening democracy, and their participation in politics is becoming increasingly necessary. He expressed concern about growing bureaucratic influence in politics, which may weaken the representative democratic structure.
Prof. Sodani also discussed the evolving socio-political landscape, challenges in the education sector, and the expanding responsibilities of teachers. He traced the teacher’s role from ancient times to the present, highlighting qualities such as sensitivity, problem-solving skills, and progressive thinking as crucial for a strong democracy.
Welcoming the guests, Vice-Chancellor Prof. S.S. Sarangdevot said that the university remains committed to fulfilling the core purpose of higher education. He stressed that teachers are the foundation of democracy, sowing seeds of national consciousness, values, and social awareness in students. He noted that democratic culture, integrity, and value-based education can flourish only through teachers.
He also highlighted the responsibility of educational institutions to create an environment that nurtures responsible citizenship and strengthens democratic thinking.
Presiding over the programme, Chancellor B.L. Gurjar said that teachers’ active contribution is vital for protecting and sustaining democracy, making their role indispensable for maintaining democratic balance.
