New Delhi: Distinguished officer Rajesh Kumar Pandey, from the 1989 batch of the Indian Railway Signal Engineering Service, has officially assumed the role of General Manager of Northern Railway.
According to a press release from Himanshu Shekhar Upadhyay, Chief Public Relations Officer of Northern Railway, Mr. Pandey, a native of Gorakhpur, Uttar Pradesh, brings extensive academic and professional experience to his new position. He holds a B.E. in Electronics from Madan Mohan Malaviya Engineering College, Gorakhpur, followed by an M.Tech from IIT Delhi.
Mr. Pandey began his illustrious career with Indian Railways as an Assistant Signal & Telecommunications Engineer at Barauni. Since then, he has served in multiple senior roles across the railway network. Notable positions include Director of Inspection at RDSO, where he enhanced quality assurance protocols; Deputy Divisional Railway Manager in Samastipur Division of East Central Railway; and Divisional Railway Manager at Pandit Deen Dayal Upadhyay Division. He also held several senior roles in Western Railway, including leading the establishment of the “Axle Counter” system in the Mumbai suburban section to ensure uninterrupted services during the monsoon.
Widely recognized for his leadership in major infrastructure and safety projects, Mr. Pandey played a key role in the completion of the Eastern Dedicated Freight Corridor during his tenure as DRM. He has also been instrumental in the development and implementation of India’s indigenous automatic train protection system, “Kavach.” Most recently, as Additional Member (Signal) on the Railway Board, he successfully oversaw the installation of Kavach on a 400 km rail section, significantly enhancing railway safety.
