Nail polish, commonly considered a cosmetic product, is now emerging as a potential substance of abuse. According to Dr. P.C. Jain, who is actively involved in anti-drug awareness campaigns, inhaling chemicals found in nail polish, nail polish remover, petrol, and thinner can lead to addiction among young people.
Dr. Jain explained that these products contain chemicals such as toluene, acetone, and other volatile substances that directly affect the brain. Initially, inhalation may cause dizziness, a false sense of happiness, or a feeling similar to intoxication. However, over time, this habit can develop into a serious addiction.
Harmful Effects of Nail Polish Inhalation
Weakening of memory
Headaches, dizziness, and confusion
Lack of concentration in studies
Mental stress and behavioral changes
Long-term damage to the nervous system
Dr. Jain warned that this is a “hidden addiction” that can silently harm young individuals.
He was speaking during his presentation at an NSS camp organized at the Rajasthan College of Agriculture. At the beginning of his session, he emphasized that screen addiction can be as harmful as drug addiction. He also discussed in detail the dangers of alcohol and tobacco abuse.
Dr. Jain further explained that the impact of different types of addiction varies between men and women. Due to differences in physical structure and metabolism, substance abuse generally causes greater harm to women compared to men.
The Dean of the college, Dr. M.K. Mehla, encouraged the regular organization of such awareness programs. Participants also collectively sang an anti-drug awareness song with the message, “Come back home before this addiction brings disgrace.”
The NSS In-charge, Dr. Hari Singh Meena, Assistant Professor, expressed his gratitude to Dr. P.C. Jain for delivering the informative session.
