‘Miracle’ at Super Speciality Hospital of RNT Medical College

Udaipur: Doctors at the Super Speciality Hospital attached to RNT Medical College performed an extraordinary and highly complex surgery, saving the life of a 32-year-old man. The patient, a resident of Bhilwara, had a 9-inch-long iron pipe that had pierced completely through his chest. The successful removal of the object marks a significant medical achievement.

Horrific Accident and Critical Condition
The accident occurred on April 24 when the युवक was riding a motorcycle behind a truck. Due to sudden braking, an iron pipe loaded on the truck slipped and penetrated his chest. The pipe was so long that it had to be cut on the spot using a cutter. The victim was brought to the hospital in a state of shock due to excessive bleeding.

CT Scan Revealed Severity
A CT scan conducted by radiology professor Dr. Kushal Gehlot revealed that the 4 cm thick pipe had broken through the ribs, pierced the lung, and extended up to the neck. It also damaged the subclavian artery and vein, causing severe internal bleeding in the chest (hemothorax).

Under the leadership of cardiothoracic surgeon Dr. Vinay Naithani, the medical team immediately began surgery. The L-shaped pipe was carefully removed from the body. This was followed by vascular repair of the damaged blood vessels, treatment of the lung, and reconstruction of the broken ribs.

The anesthesia team, led by Dr. Udita Naithani and Dr. Mahesh Somani, ensured safe anesthesia despite the patient’s critical condition. The surgical team included Dr. Girish, Dr. Jyotidro, and nursing officer Santosh Puri Goswami, along with OT and ICU staff, all of whom played crucial roles.

After the successful surgery, the patient is now stable and recovering rapidly. He has even started taking a normal diet.

Principal Dr. Rahul Jain congratulated the entire team, stating that mortality rates in such impalement injury cases are usually very high, but timely decisions and coordinated teamwork helped save a life.

Doctors also advised that in such accidents, applying pressure on the wound may help control bleeding, but one should never attempt to remove an object lodged inside the body.
