Scientists Emphasize Soil Health Management and Natural Farming During Farmers’ Seminar Under “Save the Fields” Campaign
Udaipur: Under the “Save the Fields” campaign, the Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK), Chittorgarh, organized a farmers’ seminar on June 9, 2026, at Suwawa village in Bassi. Around 60 farmers, including women farmers from nearby villages, participated in the program.
Addressing the gathering, Dr. Ratan Lal Solanki, Senior Scientist and Head of Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Chittorgarh, provided technical guidance on modern farming practices. He expressed concern over declining soil fertility and stressed the importance of balanced fertilizer use. He explained that the Government of India launched the “Save the Fields” campaign in view of the increasing difficulty in fertilizer availability and the rising cost of chemical fertilizers.
Dr. Solanki highlighted that excessive use of chemical fertilizers not only increases the cost of cultivation but also reduces soil fertility and contaminates groundwater. He noted that the imbalanced use of fertilizers has become a serious challenge for agriculture. While higher fertilizer application may initially result in better crop yields, over time it degrades soil health and adversely affects productivity.
He encouraged farmers to adopt natural farming practices and explained methods for preparing organic manure and vermicompost. Farmers were advised to conduct soil testing and make use of Soil Health Cards to ensure fertilizer application based on scientific soil analysis. He also recommended balanced nutrient management according to crop requirements and urged farmers to increase the use of organic manure, compost, and vermicompost while gradually adopting natural farming techniques.
During the program, Sanjay Kumar Dhakad of the KVK emphasized the importance of crop rotation and the use of green manure to maintain and improve soil quality.
The event was also attended by Sitaram Mahawar from Akashvani Chittorgarh, Mukesh Dhakad and Balkishan Suhalka from the Bassi Farmer Producer Organization (FPO), and Neeru Kanwar, among other participants.
