Mock Drill: Fire at New Cloth Market Claims Two Lives, Five Injured

Sriganganagar: A massive fire broke out at the New Cloth Market on Thursday, resulting in the tragic death of two individuals and injuries to five others. Prompt action by the Fire Brigade, Civil Defense, and district administration helped prevent further casualties. Fortunately, the incident occurred during a mock drill conducted by the Civil Defense Department, allowing authorities and participants to manage the situation effectively.

Deputy Controller and SDM Nayan Gautam stated that rescue teams were immediately deployed upon receiving the alert and coordinated the relief operations efficiently. District Collector Dr. Manju praised the efforts of the Fire Brigade, Civil Defense officials, and volunteers, noting that the department has previously played a leading role in mock drills, “Operation Sindoor,” and canal rescue operations.

Chief Warden Nirmal Jain explained that the mock drill scenario simulated a short circuit in an AC unit on the first floor of a shop, which led to a rapidly spreading fire engulfing two adjacent shops. The heavy storage of fabrics and flammable materials intensified the blaze, while dense smoke created panic among nearby shopkeepers and customers.

Rescue operations were complicated as the fire reached the second floor and the market lacked public staircases. Teams had to use narrow internal stairs to reach the upper floors. Fire Officer Anil Sharma and senior officer Manoj Kumar led the operation, while fireman Sukhwant Singh and his team worked under high-risk conditions to control the fire.

CDI officers Kishan Swami, Harish Kumar, and Ranjit rescued people trapped on upper floors using fireman lifts, ropes, and sliding techniques. Female volunteers Poonam and Krishna demonstrated exceptional courage by safely bringing injured women down amidst smoke and chaos. Their timely actions ensured the injured received prompt medical attention, earning praise from onlookers.

The drill showcased the preparedness, skill, and coordination of the Civil Defense and fire teams in handling high-risk emergencies effectively.
