Udaipur. In a landmark step towards strengthening healthcare services, Rajasthan’s first Kangaroo Mother Care (KMC) Lounge has been established at the Community Health Centre (CHC), Kherwada. This pioneering unit, developed under the Aspirational Block Programme, is set to give a new direction to maternal and neonatal health services in the state.

Guided by District Collector Namit Mehta and implemented under the leadership of District Council CEO Riya Dabi, the initiative is being hailed as a historic step for providing integrated and dignified care to mothers and newborns in rural areas. The project was initiated in April 2025 and, by August 2025, evolved into an innovative model for maternal and child health. The District Council and CMHO have since directed the establishment of similar units in all CHCs and PHCs across Udaipur district.

The KMC Lounge Model

The Kangaroo Mother Care Unit is based on the Zero Separation Policy, ensuring that mother and child remain together after birth. Special focus is placed on low-birth-weight or preterm infants (1800–2500 grams), who are kept in continuous skin-to-skin contact with their mothers. This process regulates the infant’s temperature, prevents hypothermia, accelerates weight gain, and prolongs breastfeeding duration, while also fostering a strong emotional bond between mother and child. Extended maternal stay in the hospital enables early detection of complications and better recovery outcomes.

Expected Impact

Continuous monitoring and care of low-birth-weight newborns at CHC level.

Reduced need for referrals to district-level SNCUs, easing the burden on tertiary hospitals.

Only critically ill or very low-birth-weight infants (below 1800 grams) will require referral.

Improved exclusive breastfeeding practices and consistent weight monitoring.

Enhanced working environment for doctors and nurses, boosting morale and community trust in government healthcare.

Recognition at National Level

The initiative gained national attention when Collector Namit Mehta presented the model at the 17th Civil Services Day at Vigyan Bhawan, New Delhi, where it was widely appreciated by senior officers and subject experts. The establishment of the unit was closely monitored, with regular inspections by the CEO and departmental officials.
