Udaipur. The cultural capital of Mewar, celebrated for its heritage and the phrase “Padharo Mhare Des”, is now confronting a modern challenge: the growing influence of dark stores that threaten local businesses and jobs. To address this, the Mewar Bachao Manch has been formed, aiming to unite people and work towards positive solutions.
Founded by Abhishek Pandey, the Manch draws inspiration from freedom fighter and India’s first MP from Mewar, Balwant Singh Mehta. The current executive committee includes Mayank Jani (Vice President), Dipesh Sharma (Secretary), Dr. Shikha Doshi, Chirag Meghwal, and Nidhi Gupta as Joint Secretaries. Plans are underway to expand the team further.
First Campaign: “Keep Udaipur’s Money in Udaipur”
The Manch’s first mission addresses the struggles of local traders who face mounting pressure from instant delivery companies and their dark stores. According to Pandey, nearly 30% of local jobs in Udaipur are directly impacted. From vegetables and groceries to electronics and even simple printing services, dark stores are bypassing traditional supply chains—cutting out farmers, wholesalers, retailers, and delivery workers.
He warned that if unchecked, this trend could destabilize Udaipur’s social and economic fabric: rental markets would collapse, small shops would shut down, and unemployment would rise sharply.
The Hidden Trap of Dark Stores
While companies lure customers with attractive offers, consumers ultimately end up paying 30–40% more per order due to hidden costs like minimum order charges, surge pricing, and handling fees. On average, each order includes ₹10–12 as handling charges.
“This is not just an economic issue—it is a blow to Udaipur’s soul,” Pandey remarked.
Three-Phase Strategy
The Manch will conduct its campaign in three phases:
Awareness among traders
Awareness among citizens
Efforts for permanent solutions
Members will engage directly with people at markets, crossroads, and tourist spots, listening to concerns and gathering suggestions. A helpline number will also be shared for citizens to connect with the movement.
Beyond Trade: Broader Social Agenda
The Manch also plans to address broader social concerns such as senior citizen safety, education, digital awareness, women’s employment, sanitation, and heart health awareness.
Their rallying call this festive season:
“This Diwali, let Udaipur’s money stay in Udaipur.”
