Udaipur – A one-day awareness program on “Diet and Nutrition for the Prevention and Control of Non-Communicable Diseases (NCDs) in the Elderly” was organized on 18 November 2025 by the Department of Food Science and Nutrition, College of Community and Applied Sciences, Maharana Pratap University of Agriculture and Technology, Udaipur, in collaboration with the National Institute of Social Defence (NISD), Ministry of Social Justice & Empowerment, Government of India.
The objective of the program was to reduce the increasing burden of NCDs among senior citizens through scientific dietary management, lifestyle modifications and psychological health awareness.
The Chief Guest, Vice-Chancellor Dr. Pratap Singh, shared valuable insights on diet and nutrition. He emphasized the inclusion of traditional foods such as millets and bathua in daily diets and highlighted the health benefits of natural eating habits. He also explained the harmful effects of fast food and packaged foods.
Dean of the college, Dr. Dhriti Solanki, outlined the structure of the program and shared detailed information about the initiative.
Program coordinator Prof. Renu Mogra, Department of Food and Nutrition, elaborated on the objectives of the event. A group discussion and personalized dietary counseling session was conducted by Prof. Sarla Lakhawat and her team, where participants received guidance on age-specific nutritional needs, balanced diets, hydration, and preventive dietary practices.
Human Development and Family Studies expert Prof. Suman Audichya (Retd.) delivered a scientific lecture on “Psychological Issues in the Elderly and Their Impact on Health and Nutritional Status.”
Urologist Dr. Rankaa Shitish from Pacific Hospital presented an evidence-based session on “Kidney Diseases in the Elderly: Causes, Prevention, and Dietary Management.” He explained chronic kidney disease, hydration, low-sodium diets and protein regulation.
Orthopedic specialist Dr. Subhash Sharma addressed “Osteoporosis and Other Bone Disorders: Causes, Prevention, and Dietary Management.” He highlighted the importance of calcium and Vitamin D, bone-loss prevention strategies, and scientific measures for maintaining bone density in senior citizens.
The program concluded with a formal vote of thanks delivered by Dr. Kamla Mahajni, Assistant Professor, Department of Food Science and Nutrition. The event was conducted by Dr. Payal Talesra.
