Udaipur: The Department of Gastro Surgery at Geetanjali Hospital, Udaipur, has successfully performed a rare and highly complex surgery on a 65-year-old patient suffering from a severe diaphragmatic hernia accompanied by gastric volvulus. The surgery was performed by renowned Gastro and Liver Surgeon Dr. Hemant Jain and his team.
The patient was admitted with serious breathing difficulties, dependence on oxygen support, inability to consume food and persistent vomiting.
Medical investigations revealed a diaphragmatic hernia with gastric volvulus, a condition in which a defect in the diaphragm, the muscle separating the chest and abdominal cavities, allows abdominal organs to move into the chest. In this case, the patient's entire stomach and large intestine had shifted into the left side of the chest, almost completely compressing the left lung and exerting pressure on the heart. The stomach had also twisted from its normal position.
Considering the patient's advanced age, severe respiratory distress, oxygen dependence and chest infection, the procedure posed significant surgical and anaesthetic challenges.
After careful planning, Dr. Hemant Jain and his team performed the surgery using a laparoscopic-assisted technique. During the procedure, the stomach and large intestine were carefully repositioned into the abdominal cavity, and the diaphragmatic defect was repaired.
Anaesthesia specialist Dr. Anuj Jain and his team played a crucial role in the successful procedure. Given the patient's serious respiratory and cardiac condition, specialised anaesthesia management was undertaken. Close coordination between the surgical and anaesthesia teams ensured the successful completion of the operation.
Remarkably, despite the complexity of the surgery and the patient's critical pre-operative condition, he did not require admission to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) after the operation. His post-operative recovery has been satisfactory.
Dr. Hemant Jain explained that diaphragmatic hernia associated with gastric volvulus is a rare and potentially serious condition. Timely diagnosis, appropriate surgical intervention and the expertise of a specialised medical team are essential for successful treatment.
The Department of Gastro Surgery at Geetanjali Hospital, under the leadership of Dr. Hemant Jain, also performs a wide range of complex surgeries related to the pancreas, liver and other abdominal organs using advanced surgical techniques.
