Under the joint auspices of the Udaipur Science Committee and the Dr. D.S. Kothari Institute, the 11th Monthly Technology Lecture Series was organized. Speaking on the role of heavy water in nuclear power plants, Dr. K.K. Sharma said that nuclear energy has a significant contribution to India’s total energy requirements. India currently has 25 reactors. To keep the reactors operational, a four-tier energy system is provided, and no radiation escapes from the plants. All nuclear power plants in India follow safety standards that are stricter than international norms, and all arrangements are in place to ensure strict compliance.
So far, uranium is largely used as fuel in most plants, but since thorium is abundantly available in India, it will be used as a fuel in the future.
Media in-charge Professor Vimal Sharma informed that while presiding over the event, Dr. Maheep Bhatnagar, President of the Science Committee, emphasized the need for nuclear energy and its pollution-free power generation. The introduction of the chief speaker was presented by Prof. K.P. Talesara. Students of Adinath Senior Secondary School participated in the program and asked several curiosity-driven questions.
Several distinguished members of the Kothari Institute and the Committee—Engineer M.P. Jain, Engineer B.L. Khamesra, Engineer R.K. Khokhawat, Munish Goyal, among others—were present. The vote of thanks was delivered by Dr. R.K. Garg, Secretary General of the Science Committee.
