Lake expert Dr. Anil Mehta highlighted that the increasing movement of tourist vehicles around the lakes is contributing to air pollution through smoke and fine particulate matter from tire wear. These toxic pollutants are reaching the lakes, degrading the quality of drinking water, while sewage flow continues unabated.
Former member of the Lake Development Authority, Tej Shankar Paliwal, pointed out that garbage piles are accumulating along the lake shores, with sanitation workers largely absent. He noted that lake cleaning has been lax, especially since the Diwali festival period.
Environmentalist Nand Kishore Sharma added that the lack of adequate dustbins is causing tourists to dispose of mineral water bottles, liquor bottles, plastic wrappers, and other waste near the lakes, which is highly concerning.
Young environmental activist Kushal Rawal emphasized that local residents also dispose of household and shop waste into the lakes, further harming the lakes’ delicate ecosystems.
Senior citizen Drupad Singh urged the Municipal Corporation and UDA to appoint responsible nodal officers to ensure proper maintenance and cleanliness of the lakes.
