Merck Foundation Empowers 925 Doctors on World Heart Day 2025

ACCRA, Ghana: On the occasion of World Heart Day 2025, Merck Foundation, in partnership with African and Asian First Ladies, Ministries of Health, and Medical Societies, announced 925 specialized scholarships for doctors from 52 countries. These scholarships cover one-year Post-Graduate Diplomas, two-year Master’s Degrees, and one-year clinical Fellowships in Preventive Cardiovascular Medicine, Cardiology, Diabetes, Endocrinology, Obesity & Weight Management, and Hypertension.

Senator Dr. Rasha Kelej, CEO of Merck Foundation, emphasized, “Our aim is to strengthen healthcare capacity, expand access to quality care, and build a robust network of specialists beyond major cities and capitals.” The initiative is part of Merck Foundation’s broader program, which has already provided over 2,400 scholarships across 44 underserved medical specialties globally.

In addition, Merck Foundation launched children’s storybooks and animated films, Mark’s Pressure and Sugar Free Jude, to raise awareness about hypertension, diabetes, and healthy lifestyles among children and youth in Africa and beyond. These initiatives complement community awareness efforts, including the Blue Points Program, promoting prevention, early detection, and effective management of cardiovascular and metabolic disorders.

Merck Foundation also announced awards for media, filmmakers, fashion designers, and singers across Africa to promote awareness on diabetes and hypertension, with submissions open until October 30, 2025.

Dr. Nakigunda Kiroga, a Merck Foundation alumnus from Tanzania, praised the programs, highlighting enhanced clinical and research capabilities and improved patient education. With cardiovascular diseases claiming millions of lives globally, Merck Foundation’s scholarships, educational resources, and awareness campaigns mark a significant step toward building healthier communities worldwide.
