RNT Medical College Successfully Treats Complex Skull Meningioma with Advanced Preoperative Tumor Embolization

Udaipur — The interventional neurosurgery team at RNT Medical College successfully treated a 48-year-old patient from Vallabhnagar suffering from a large and highly vascular diploic meningioma (a skull tumor). Such tumors receive an extensive blood supply, making surgery extremely risky due to the potential for severe blood loss, sometimes requiring multiple liters of transfusion during the procedure.

To minimize this risk, an advanced technique known as preoperative tumor embolization was performed before surgery. In this procedure, specialized liquid and solid embolic agents are used to block the arteries supplying blood to the tumor. This significantly reduces intraoperative bleeding, softens the tumor, and increases the likelihood of its complete removal, thereby improving patient safety and survival outcomes.

Dr. Rahul Jain, Principal of RNT Medical College, stated that with the expansion of modern medical facilities at the institution, this advanced treatment is now available free of cost under government schemes. Previously, patients had to travel to major metropolitan cities and bear high expenses for such procedures. He added that the institution aims to further develop advanced neuro-medical services so that high-quality treatment can be provided locally.

Dr. K.G. Lodha, Associate Professor in the Department of Neurosurgery and trained in interventional neurosurgery, explained that tumor embolization is one of the latest and most effective techniques for treating highly vascular tumors. By reducing the tumor’s blood supply, it induces necrosis and makes microsurgical removal safer and easier. He also noted that the same technique can be life-saving in other critical conditions such as postpartum hemorrhage and severe epistaxis (nosebleeds).

The success of this procedure was supported by the guidance of Dr. Vipin Mathur, Medical Superintendent of the Super Specialty Hospital. The team also included Dr. Gaurav Jaiswal (Head, Neurosurgery), Dr. Tarun Ralot (Head, Neurology), Dr. Udita Naithani (Head, Anesthesia), Dr. Khemraj Meena (Senior Professor, Anesthesia), Dr. Pankaj Somani, along with cath lab staff Lohit Dixit, Krishna, Priyanka, and resident doctors.

This achievement marks a significant step forward in advanced neurosurgical care at RNT Medical College, making cutting-edge treatment more accessible to patients in the region.
