Special Feature on World Red Cross Day
Udaipur | Under the aegis of Janmat Manch, a program was organized at the office of the Red Cross Society—located in Hiran Magri, Sector-5—on the occasion of Red Cross and Red Crescent Day.
In his address, Founder-President Dr. Shrinivas stated that the Red Cross is an international, independent, and impartial humanitarian organization that provides assistance to the wounded and victims during times of war, natural disasters, and emergency situations, without any discrimination.
**Historical Significance of the Red Cross**
Providing historical context, Dr. Shrinivas explained that the organization was founded in 1863 by Jean Henry Dunant—on his birthday, May 8th—in Geneva, Switzerland, after he witnessed the horrific scenes of the Battle of Solferino. Its primary objective is to alleviate human suffering. The Red Cross has been honored with the Nobel Peace Prize on three occasions: in 1917, 1944, and 1963.
The symbol of a red cross on a white background—which is an inverted version of the Swiss flag—stands as a universal symbol of humanity. In Muslim-majority countries, the organization is also recognized as the 'Red Crescent' (the Red Half-Moon).
**The Indian Red Cross Society**
The Indian Red Cross Society (IRCS) was established in 1920 under Act XV of the Parliament. It is an integral part of the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement and, with a network of over 700 branches, works across the country to provide relief during disasters and emergencies, deliver healthcare services, and assist vulnerable populations.
Kamal Prakash Bikaneria of the Red Cross Society highlighted the organization's objectives, noting that the Red Cross provides training in first aid—a skill that plays a crucial and vital role during times of disaster. The Forum's Secretary, Shirish Nath Mathur, outlined the seven fundamental principles of the Red Cross Society, highlighting humanity, impartiality, neutrality, independence, voluntary service, unity, and universality as key tenets.
This day serves to raise awareness among people regarding peace and humanitarian aid. It reminds us that, even in the most challenging circumstances, humanity remains the supreme religion.
On this occasion, coupons for free relief supplies were distributed to those in need.
The program was anchored by Santosh Arora, and the vote of thanks was delivered by the Forum's Assistant Secretary, Vinod Kumar Chaudhary.
