Cochlear Implant Surgery is a Blessing for Deaf Children" - Padma Shri Dr. Hans

Udaipur, When a child is born with congenital hearing loss, the resulting deafness has far-reaching implications beyond physical disability. Children born with hearing impairment face challenges in speech and communication. This makes it difficult for them to learn to read and write, and they often encounter various obstacles in their future. Cochlear implants are a game-changer for these children, as explained by the renowned Padma Shri Dr. Hans.

Dr. Hans introduced a new technique, "Electronic Free Implant," through live surgery at the Padmavibhushan Professor L.H. Hiranandani AOI National Midterm Congress organized by the Pacific Medical College and Hospital in collaboration with the Department of Otolaryngology and the Mevad Research Foundation on Saturday.

During the cochlear implant live surgery at the conference, Dr. Hans highlighted that in the past, a substantial cavity needed to be created in the scalp during the surgery. However, with the new implant, a 1.4 mm tunnel is created in the scalp, allowing for a more precise and secure fit. This implant does not contain any electronic components, ensuring its long-term durability.

Dr. Hans emphasized that congenital deafness can result from factors such as consanguineous marriages and maternal infections like toxoplasmosis, rubella, cytomegalovirus, and syphilis during pregnancy.

Dr. S.S. Kaushik, the Secretary of the conference, explained that the three-day event included live cochlear implant surgery by Padma Shri Dr. Hans, stapedotomy by Dr. Ramalingam, facial surgery by Dr. Deepak Haldipur, tympanosclerosis by Dr. H. Vijendra, revision endoscopic DCR by Dr. S.P. Dubey, and auricular tympanoplasty by Dr. Sanjay Agrawal. The conference also featured paper presentations, poster presentations, guest lectures, workshops on early management, and a quiz competition.

Richa Gupta, the Chairman of the conference, mentioned that the conference would involve discussions and deliberations by medical professionals on various innovative approaches in the first session. The second and third sessions would include presentations by external experts on technical subjects like allergic rhinitis, auricular tympanoplasty, and plexoval endoscopy. The event also included the final round of a quiz competition, discussions on the surgical management of head and neck cancer, outpatient department management, ENT outpatient department management with new techniques, robotic surgery in ENT, and the comprehensive assessment of current anatomical structures related to ENT procedures.

This conference aimed to provide a broad platform for discussion and exploration of emerging techniques and treatments in the field of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery.
