Udaipur.The Union Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change will examine and approve new proposals submitted by state governments for the establishment of Urban Forests or Urban Gardens. This information was provided by Union Minister Bhupender Yadav in response to an issue raised by MP Dr. Mannalal Rawat under Rule 377 in Parliament.

Yadav informed that the Ministry has been implementing the Nagar Van Yojana (Urban Forest Scheme) since 2020. The objective of the scheme is to conserve forest land, expand green cover, and develop protected spaces within urban and semi-urban areas to safeguard them from degradation and encroachment. He clarified that state governments may send fresh proposals for setting up Urban Forests or Gardens, which will be duly considered by the Centre.

Highlighting the broader efforts of the Ministry, Yadav noted that several initiatives are underway, including the National Mission for a Green India (GIM), the Nagar Van Yojana (NVY), and the Mangrove Initiative for Shoreline Habitat & Tangible Benefits (MISHTI). Additionally, afforestation and reforestation activities are being carried out under the Compensatory Afforestation Fund Management and Planning Authority (CAMPA).

The Minister further emphasized that the Ministry actively promotes mass plantation drives on occasions such as International Day of Forests, World Environment Day, Van Mahotsav, and Wildlife Week. Public participation is encouraged to spread awareness and strengthen conservation efforts.

One such notable campaign, “Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam” (One Tree in Mother’s Name), launched on 5 June 2024, has inspired citizens across the country to plant trees as a tribute to their mothers.
