The results of the Vice Presidential election have been declared. NDA candidate C.P. Radhakrishnan defeated opposition nominee Justice B. Sudarshan Reddy to secure the post. Radhakrishnan received 452 votes, while Reddy managed 300 votes. The announcement was made by Rajya Sabha Secretary General P.C. Mody.

The election became necessary after Jagdeep Dhankhar, the outgoing Vice President, resigned in July 2025 citing health reasons. Article 67(a) of the Constitution allows the Vice President to step down before completing the five-year term. Dhankhar’s resignation created an unexpected political situation, making way for fresh elections.

The candidates in focus

This contest was essentially between two contrasting figures:

C.P. Radhakrishnan, representing the NDA, known for his RSS background, calm persona, and non-controversial image.

Justice B. Sudarshan Reddy, a former Supreme Court judge, fielded by the INDIA bloc as a symbol of constitutional values, justice, and democratic safeguards.

Thus, the election symbolized more than a choice between two individuals. It reflected a clash of ideologies between the ruling NDA and the opposition INDIA bloc.

Voting and results

Polling was held on 9 September 2025 in Parliament from 10 AM to 5 PM. Out of 781 MPs, nearly 98% cast their votes. Counting began at 6 PM, and results were declared the same night. With a 152-vote margin, Radhakrishnan’s victory highlighted both the NDA’s numerical strength and the continuing challenges to opposition unity.

The significance of the Vice Presidency

The offices of President and Vice President are vital pillars of India’s democratic framework. While the President is the constitutional head of state, the Vice President holds dual responsibilities—acting as the Chairperson of the Rajya Sabha and serving as acting President in the President’s absence.
