Udaipur: Matsyaki College, a constituent of Maharana Pratap University of Agriculture and Technology, celebrated World Fisheries Day on Friday. The event highlighted the importance of sustainable fisheries and the role of the sector in employment and nutrition.

Dr. R. L. Soni, Principal of the college, emphasized the nutritional value of fish and noted that India’s fisheries sector provides employment to over 3 crore youth. He also introduced the theme for World Fisheries Day 2025, “Sustainable and Inclusive Blue Economy”, and discussed the promotion of sustainable exploitation in the Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ). Globally, two-thirds of fish production comes from aquaculture, while one-third is from marine fisheries. Dr. Soni highlighted challenges such as illegal, unregulated, and unreported fishing, pollution, and global warming, which are impacting fish production.

Encouraging the students, Dr. M. L. Ojha shared important facts about fisheries and provided insights into government initiatives like the Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana and the Pradhan Mantri Kisan Samriddhi Yojana. He also explained the significance of Fisheries Farmers’ Day and World Fisheries Day. Dr. Nitesh Kumar Yadav gave a brief overview of sustainable fish farming and small-scale fisheries projects.

Other faculty members, including Dr. Sahida Jaipuri, Mrs. Aarti Verma, Mr. Prabhulal, Mr. Jitendra, and Mr. Prakash, attended the program, while students Swaroop Singh and Nitin shared the significance of World Fisheries Day. The event was attended by all students of the college, marking an informative and inspiring celebration of fisheries awareness.
