Udaipur: Hariyali Amavasya, a festival symbolizing nature, devotion and environmental awareness, was celebrated at the City Palace in Udaipur. Traditionally observed on the new moon day of the Shravan month, the festival marks the arrival of the monsoon, the growth of greenery and gratitude towards nature.

In Mewar, every Monday during Shravan is traditionally observed as “Sukhiya Somvar.” On Hariyali Amavasya, the tradition of adorning Lord Eklingnath with a green leheriya cloth remains an important cultural practice.

Women from the Zenana Mahal of the City Palace, dressed in traditional attire, reached Rameshwar Ghat accompanied by bands and drums while singing traditional songs. They performed rituals and worshipped the Peepal tree and water, expressing reverence for nature. Wearing green leheriya attire is also a significant part of the celebration.

The environmental initiatives of Mewar’s 77th Ekling Diwan, Dr. Lakshyaraj Singh Mewar, have given this age-old tradition a contemporary meaning. Through campaigns such as “Go Green” and “Save Water,” he has promoted awareness about water conservation, greenery and responsible use of natural resources.

Hariyali Amavasya reminds people that protecting nature is not only a tradition but also a responsibility towards future generations.
