Udaipur: Doctors at Pacific Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS), Udaipur, successfully treated a 15-year-old boy suffering from severe tetanus, giving him a new lease of life. The critically ill patient required nearly a month of treatment in the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU), including approximately 22 days of ventilator support. Following prolonged and complex treatment, the child made a complete recovery and was discharged without any significant disease-related complications.
The patient was treated by a team from the Department of Pediatrics under the leadership of Dr. Vivek Parashar. The team included Dr. Rahul Khatri, Dr. Manoj Joshi, Dr. Swami, Dr. Jaya and resident doctor Nizam. Given the severity of the condition and the need for multidisciplinary care, Dr. Amit Jangid from the Department of Anesthesiology and Dr. Vikram Rathore from the ENT Department also played an important role in the treatment.
Tetanus is a serious and potentially life-threatening disease caused by a toxin produced by the bacterium Clostridium tetani. The bacteria are commonly found in soil, dust and animal feces and can enter the body through cuts, abrasions, deep wounds or injuries caused by contaminated objects.
The disease can cause severe muscle stiffness and painful spasms. In serious cases, the muscles involved in breathing may also be affected, requiring prolonged ventilator support.
The condition of the child was critical and required continuous intensive monitoring, ventilator support and specialized medical care. The PICU team provided round-the-clock monitoring, while coordinated efforts by specialists from different departments helped stabilize the patient and gradually improve his condition. He was subsequently weaned successfully from the ventilator and, after continued improvement, was discharged from the hospital in a stable and healthy condition.
Vaccination Can Prevent Tetanus
Doctors emphasized that tetanus is a vaccine-preventable disease. Children should receive timely vaccinations according to the national immunization schedule, along with booster doses at the recommended ages. Adults should also take tetanus booster vaccinations as advised by healthcare professionals.
In case of an injury, the wound should be cleaned promptly and thoroughly with clean water and soap, with dirt and other contaminants removed. Medical advice should be sought promptly when necessary. Relying solely on home remedies or waiting for symptoms to appear can be risky.
Tetanus generally does not spread from person to person. However, once infection occurs, it can become extremely serious. Timely vaccination and proper wound care following an injury remain the most effective measures for prevention.
PIMS Chairman Ashish Agrawal and the medical team said that the successful recovery of the child was the result of timely treatment, advanced pediatric intensive care, safe long-term ventilator management and close coordination among multiple specialist departments. The child's return home in good health after spending approximately 22 days on ventilator support was a significant achievement and a moment of satisfaction for both the medical team and the family.
