A highly complex and challenging surgery was successfully performed at the Department of Gastro Surgery, Geetanjali Hospital, on a 21-year-old woman from Jalore suffering from massive hydatid cysts in the liver.
Doctors discovered two giant hydatid cysts in the patient’s liver, one measuring nearly 31 centimeters, extending from the liver throughout the abdomen and pelvis, while the second cyst measured around 13 centimeters.
Hydatid cyst is a special type of parasitic infection of the liver caused by Echinococcus granulosus. In most cases, the disease can be managed with medicines, but in this patient, the infection had progressed abnormally and severely affected the abdominal structure.
The patient had previously undergone surgery elsewhere, but the disease recurred. Over time, the cyst enlarged significantly, leading to persistent abdominal pain, vomiting, weakness, abdominal swelling, and breathing difficulties. The massive cyst was compressing the right kidney, ureter, and large intestine and was also connected to the bile ducts of the liver.
The patient was referred to senior gastro and liver surgeon Dr. Hemant Jain at Geetanjali Hospital. After detailed investigations and CT scan evaluation, the medical team decided to proceed with surgery.
The operation was considered extremely difficult due to the high risk of excessive bleeding, bile leakage, severe infection, and possible injury to the ureter, large intestine, and liver. Safely removing such a huge cyst was itself a major technical challenge.
Despite these risks, the surgery was successfully carried out through meticulous planning, expert surgical skills, and coordinated teamwork. Both cysts were completely removed, and the patient is now recovering well.
The surgical team included senior gastro surgeon Dr. Hemant Jain along with Dr. Meet Patel, Dr. Manan Patel, and Dr. Neeraj. The anesthesia team comprising Dr. Anush, Dr. Yashwant, and Dr. Bhavik played a crucial role during the procedure. OT staff members Hemant Garg, Jitendra, Kishan, and Arvind also provided significant support during the surgery.
