Prime Minister Narendra Modi Creates a Unique Record

Jaipur: Prime Minister Narendra Modi has created a remarkable record by completing 8,931 days in governance as both the Prime Minister of India and the Chief Minister of Gujarat. With this achievement, he has surpassed the record of former Sikkim Chief Minister Pawan Kumar Chamling. Leaders from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the NDA, including those in Rajasthan, have expressed happiness over this milestone.

Setting new records is no longer new for Modi. He now joins the ranks of long-serving leaders alongside Jawaharlal Nehru, and has already surpassed Indira Gandhi in terms of long tenure in leadership roles. As a head of government, he has also gone past several leaders known for their extended tenures, including Jyoti Basu and Mohan Lal Sukhadia.

According to political experts, Jawaharlal Nehru led India from August 15, 1947, to May 27, 1964—about 6,130 days, making him the longest-serving Prime Minister in India’s history.

Mohan Lal Sukhadia remains the longest-serving Chief Minister of Rajasthan, holding office from November 13, 1954, to July 9, 1971, for approximately 16 years, 7 months, and 26 days (around 6,050 days).

Similarly, Jyoti Basu served as Chief Minister of West Bengal from June 21, 1977, to November 6, 2000—about 23 years, 4 months, and 16 days (around 8,510 days), making him one of the longest-serving Chief Ministers in India.

However, Pawan Kumar Chamling holds the record as India’s longest-serving Chief Minister, having governed Sikkim from December 12, 1994, to May 27, 2019, for about 24 years, 5 months, and 15 days (around 8,935 days).

Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s tenure can be divided into two phases: his time as Chief Minister of Gujarat and as Prime Minister of India. He served as Gujarat’s Chief Minister from October 7, 2001, to May 22, 2014—12 years, 7 months, and 15 days (approximately 4,610 days). As Prime Minister, he has been in office since May 26, 2014, continuing through 2026—about 11 years and 10 months (over 4,320 days). Altogether, his combined tenure as a top executive leader exceeds 24 years and 5 months, making it a significant example of sustained political leadership in India.

Throughout his public life, Narendra Modi has maintained strong ties with Rajasthan. BJP leaders in the state have celebrated his achievement and recalled his long association with the region. Senior BJP leader Omkar Singh Lakhawat stated that Modi eliminated middlemen in governance and ensured direct benefit transfers to citizens’ bank accounts, countering earlier concerns about leakages in welfare delivery.

Due to Gujarat being a neighboring state, Modi’s connection with Rajasthan goes back decades. As a volunteer and pracharak of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), he visited the state multiple times during significant periods such as the Emergency and the JP Movement. As BJP’s national organizational leader, he frequently traveled across Rajasthan, building strong relationships with local leaders and workers. He shared close associations with leaders like Bhairon Singh Shekhawat and Sundar Singh Bhandari.

In recent years, especially after the formation of a “double-engine government,” Prime Minister Narendra Modi has visited Rajasthan more than a dozen times, supporting the vision of development under Chief Minister Bhajan Lal Sharma. Several major development projects worth thousands of crores have been launched in the state. Modi also played a key role in BJP’s electoral success in Rajasthan, with the party contesting elections under his leadership.
