Becoming Mahavira: The True Meaning of Life

The entire life of Lord Mahavira is a living inspiration for the rise of the self and the welfare of others. His life is not merely a religious story of the past, but a timeless message for humanity. Through his austerity, discipline, meditation, and inner awakening, he illuminated millions of lives. Mahavira is not just a historical figure; he is a philosophy of life, a path of self-awakening, a symbol of a healthy, self-reliant, disciplined, and enlightened human being. Therefore, becoming a Mahavira is the true meaning and purpose of life.

Every year we celebrate Mahavir Jayanti with great devotion and enthusiasm, but this year the celebration should not remain limited to rituals, processions, and formal programs. This year Mahavir Jayanti must become a meaningful occasion for self-transformation and inner awakening. Mahavira should not only be worshipped in temples, but should be imbibed in life. The real celebration of Mahavir Jayanti is to look within, to discipline our lifestyle, to control our mind, and to purify our conduct. Every person should prepare himself to become a Mahavira. Only such a person can truly overcome the problems of life. A Mahavira is one who is completely devoted to his goal, whose lifestyle is disciplined and restrained, who has the capacity to endure hardships, who can maintain equanimity and balance even in adverse circumstances, who practices silence and self-control, and who has a feeling of coexistence with all living beings. A true Mahavira is one who not only changes his own destiny through effort but also wishes for a bright future for the entire humanity.

Though Mahavira was born centuries ago, his life and teachings are even more relevant today in this age of stress, diseases, fear, and instability. Mahavira was a pioneer of healthy living, disciplined lifestyle, meditation, and inner strength. His famous message “Appana Sacchameseja” – Find the truth yourself is a call for self-awakening and self-reliance. He did not make people dependent on crutches; he taught them to walk on their own feet. He not only showed the path but also awakened the inner light. Mahavira gave the world a great science of healthy living, and one of its most important practices is Kayotsarga. Kayotsarga means relaxation of the body, detachment from the body, calming the mind, focusing on breath, and experiencing the soul beyond the body. It is both the beginning and the culmination of spiritual practice. It is a powerful method to reduce stress, fear, tension, and many physical and mental disorders.

In today’s world, stress, anxiety, high blood pressure, insomnia, and mental unrest have become common problems. Modern medical science also advises patients to relax the body, slow down breathing, and calm the mind during medical examinations and treatments. This is essentially the principle of Kayotsarga. Regular practice of Kayotsarga can help in maintaining both physical and mental health. It is meditation, relaxation, medicine, and spiritual practice all together. There are many misconceptions that Jain philosophy promotes suffering of the body. In reality, Mahavira never supported torturing the body; he emphasized disciplining and purifying the body and mind. Austerity does not mean giving pain to the body; it means developing control, endurance, and discipline. Without controlling the body and mind, spiritual development is not possible.

Silence, meditation, fasting, restraint, and disciplined living are not merely religious rituals; they are scientific methods for a healthy and peaceful life. Anyone who wants physical, mental, and spiritual health, and wants freedom from fear, stress, and disease, should adopt this great practice of Kayotsarga in life. Lord Mahavira is truly a shining beam of inner light. His life is the culmination of austerity, meditation, discipline, and character. His teachings are life-giving and contain solutions to the problems of life. Mahavira is like a Chinmaya Deepak—a conscious lamp that removes the darkness of ignorance and illuminates the inner world.

The true meaning of Mahavir Jayanti is not just celebration, but transformation. It is not just worship, but practice. It is not just remembering Mahavira, but becoming Mahavira in our conduct, discipline, thinking, and lifestyle. On this Mahavir Jayanti, let us take a pledge: We will not only worship Mahavira, we will walk on his path. We will not only light lamps outside, we will light the lamp within. We will not only celebrate Mahavir Jayanti; we will transform our life in the light of Mahavira. This will be the true celebration of Mahavir Jayanti and the true tribute to Lord Mahavira.
