RNT Medical College Successfully Performs Highly Complex Heart Surgery

Udaipur: Doctors at the Department of Cardiothoracic and Vascular Surgery of Rabindranath Tagore Medical College successfully performed a highly challenging and risky heart surgery.

On May 8, the department operated on a 55-year-old patient from Chittorgarh to remove a large tumor from the heart in a complex surgical procedure. According to medical reports, the patient had developed an extremely large tumor inside the heart, which had almost completely filled both upper chambers (atria). The tumor was attached to the wall of the left atrium, the mitral valve, and the septum between the two atria.

Due to this condition, the patient was suffering from severe breathing difficulty, heart failure, and pulmonary hypertension.

The patient consulted Head of Department and Professor Dr. Vinay Nathani. Doctors informed the patient and his family about the high-risk nature of the surgery, including a 30–40% chance of mortality. Despite the risk, the patient and family gave consent for the operation.

Under the leadership of Dr. Vinay Nathani, the surgical team performed an open-heart surgery using cardiopulmonary arrest technique. Initially, the team attempted to remove the tumor through the right atrium; however, due to its large size and strong attachment to the left atrial wall and mitral valve, the left atrium also had to be opened.

With extreme caution, the surgeons successfully removed the tumor in a single piece.

During the surgery, repairing the extremely thin walls of both atria posed a major challenge. After a nearly 6-hour-long procedure, the patient was successfully taken off the cardiopulmonary bypass machine and shifted to the ICU. Later, he was removed from ventilator support and is now able to take normal diet.

The anesthesia team included Dr. Uditha Nathani and Dr. Mahesh, who played a crucial role in the procedure. The operation was also supported by Dr. Jyotindra, Dr. Atul, nursing staff member Santosh, and perfusionist Gautam.
