Rare Bone Disorder “Paget’s Disease” Successfully Treated at PMCH: 69-Year-Old Woman Walks Again

Udaipur: Timely testing, accurate diagnosis, and coordinated teamwork form the foundation for successfully treating complex medical conditions. A perfect example of this was demonstrated by the Department of Orthopedics and Endocrinology at Pacific Medical College & Hospital (PMCH), which successfully treated a 69-year-old woman suffering from the rare bone disorder Paget’s disease, giving her a new lease on life.

The patient, a 69-year-old woman from Pali, had been struggling with severe bone pain and difficulty walking for a long time. She was also a known diabetic. Despite consulting local doctors, her condition did not improve. Her family brought her to PMCH, where Dr. Saurabh Gupta from the Endocrinology Department conducted detailed tests and diagnosed her with Paget’s disease—a rare condition where bones become hollow and extremely fragile, increasing the risk of fractures.

Dr. Rohit Jhamnani explained that in this condition, bones are internally weak and brittle, making fractures particularly challenging to treat. The patient had suffered a pathological fracture, which is far more complex to operate on than a normal fracture due to the extreme fragility of the bones.

Treatment at PMCH was carried out in two phases. Under Dr. Saurabh Gupta’s leadership, the Endocrinology team first stabilized the disease metabolically, reducing surgical risks. Then, Dr. Major Rohit Jhamnani and the Orthopedics team performed the surgery, successfully fixing the fracture despite the abnormal and fragile nature of the bones.

Post-surgery, the patient recovered without complications. Both the Endocrinology and Orthopedic teams closely monitored her progress. The doctors noted that cases of Paget’s disease are rare in India and often remain undiagnosed until a fracture occurs. Timely diagnosis and interdisciplinary coordination were key to this success.

The patient’s family expressed heartfelt gratitude to the hospital, stating that the high-quality care and advanced treatment enabled her to walk pain-free again. PMCH Chairman Rahul Agrawal congratulated the teams, emphasizing that PMCH aims to provide world-class multi-specialty care under one roof. This successful treatment demonstrates that even rare and complex diseases can be effectively managed with modern technology and expert teamwork.

What is Paget’s Disease?
Paget’s disease is a rare bone disorder in which the normal cycle of bone breakdown and formation is disrupted. As a result, bones become abnormally large, weak, and deformed. In India, cases are uncommon and often detected only after bone pain or sudden fractures occur. With timely intervention from endocrinology and orthopedics specialists, the disease can be effectively managed.
