###Paras Health Udaipur Achieves Milestone with Rare Brain Surgery for Moyamoya Disease

Udaipur, : In a significant milestone for advanced neurosurgical care, Paras Health Udaipur has successfully performed a rare Encephaloduroarteriosynangiosis (EDAS) procedure to treat Moyamoya disease, one of the first such surgeries to be carried out in Udaipur. The achievement marks a major step forward in expanding access to specialized cerebrovascular care across Southern Rajasthan.

The patient, identified as Mukesh (name changed), had been suffering from recurrent strokes and brain hemorrhages before seeking treatment at Paras Health Udaipur. Following comprehensive clinical evaluation, the neurosurgical team led by Dr. Ajit Singh successfully performed the complex EDAS surgery, with support from senior cardiac surgeon Dr. Santosh Gupta and consultant neurosurgeon Dr. S. R. Chaudhary.

Detailed neurological assessment and cerebral angiography confirmed that the patient had Moyamoya disease, a rare progressive cerebrovascular disorder affecting approximately four to five people per 100,000 in India. The condition causes gradual narrowing of the arteries supplying blood to the brain, significantly increasing the risk of ischemic stroke and intracranial hemorrhage.

After discussing treatment options with the patient's family, the medical team recommended EDAS, an advanced indirect revascularization procedure that promotes the development of new collateral blood vessels, gradually restoring blood flow to the brain and reducing the long-term risk of stroke.

Dr. Ajit Singh, Director and Head of Neurosurgery at Paras Health Udaipur, said that Moyamoya disease, although uncommon, can be life-threatening, particularly among younger patients who often present with recurrent strokes or brain hemorrhages. He emphasized that early diagnosis and timely surgical intervention are essential to prevent permanent neurological damage. He added that the successful completion of the EDAS procedure reflects the hospital's commitment to providing advanced neurosurgical care closer to patients' homes.

Facility Director Anubhav Sukhwani said the successful surgery demonstrates the hospital's commitment to delivering advanced, evidence-based healthcare through a multidisciplinary team of specialists. He noted that the hospital continues to invest in clinical excellence, technology, and specialized expertise to ensure patients in the region receive world-class treatment without having to travel to larger cities.

During the procedure, surgeons meticulously isolated and preserved the approximately 1.5 mm superficial temporal artery using advanced microsurgical techniques. A small opening was created in the skull, and the artery was positioned on the brain's surface to encourage the gradual formation of new collateral blood vessels, improving cerebral circulation over time. The anesthesia team, led by Dr. Abizer, carefully managed the patient's blood pressure throughout the operation to minimize the risk of perioperative stroke.

The surgery was completed successfully, and the patient recovered without complications. He was discharged two days later and is expected to continue making steady progress under regular follow-up care.

With the successful treatment of this rare condition, Paras Health Udaipur has further strengthened its position as a leading centre for advanced brain and spine care in Rajasthan. Backed by a multidisciplinary team of experienced specialists, the hospital continues to provide highly specialized neurological and neurosurgical services, enabling patients to access complex treatments closer to home.
