Successful ERCP and Laparoscopic Surgery Performed on 3-Year-Old Child; Complex CBD Stone Treated Without Major Surgery

Udaipur: A complex case of common bile duct (CBD) stone was successfully treated at Geetanjali Hospital using advanced gastroenterology and laparoscopic surgical techniques. A team of specialist doctors treated a 3-year-old child without any major surgery, and the patient was discharged in a healthy condition within just five days.

The child was brought to the pediatric OPD with complaints of abdominal pain, jaundice, and fever, where he was initially examined by Dr. Subhash. After preliminary evaluation, the case was referred to gastroenterology specialist Dr. Kartikeya Mathur.

Dr. Mathur conducted an MRI scan, which revealed a stone in the common bile duct (CBD). The stone was successfully removed using an ERCP (Endoscopic Retrograde Cholangiopancreatography) procedure. He explained that performing ERCP on such a young child was extremely challenging, as the procedure is generally done using adult-sized equipment. Successfully carrying it out in a 3-year-old was like winning a major medical battle.

He further stated that timely ERCP relieved the blockage in the bile duct and made the subsequent surgery safer and easier. After this, the patient was referred for gallbladder removal surgery to pediatric surgeon Dr. Ajit Kumar.

Dr. Kumar successfully performed a laparoscopic cholecystectomy using minimally invasive techniques. He noted that laparoscopic gallbladder surgery in such a small child is not a routine procedure, but it was made possible safely with modern technology and strong teamwork.

Doctors explained that due to the combined use of ERCP and laparoscopic cholecystectomy, there was no need for a major CBD exploration surgery. This resulted in faster recovery, reduced pain, and a significantly shorter hospital stay.

Experts added that with modern minimally invasive techniques, even complex bile duct and gallbladder conditions can now be treated with less pain, fewer complications, and faster recovery times.
