Bihar MLC Elections 2026: Will Rupesh Pandey Emerge as NDA’s New Face?

Patna,  Political activity in Bihar has intensified ahead of the upcoming Legislative Council elections scheduled to be held by November 2026. With elections due for 17 seats in the Bihar Legislative Council, political parties have already begun strategizing aggressively. The atmosphere in both Patna and Delhi has become politically charged as discussions over probable candidates gain momentum.

The political equations changed significantly after Chief Minister Nitish Kumar resigned from the Legislative Council on March 30. As a result, nine seats will become vacant on June 28, 2026, while another eight seats are scheduled to fall vacant in November this year. This has turned the upcoming elections into a major political contest for all parties in the state.

According to the current strength of MLAs in the Bihar Assembly, a candidate requires the support of at least 25 legislators to secure victory in the Legislative Council elections. With the ruling NDA enjoying a comfortable majority of around 202 MLAs, the alliance is considered to be in a dominant position.

Political circles believe that Deputy Chief Minister Samrat Choudhary may attempt to strengthen the NDA’s hold further by introducing fresh faces in the MLC elections. Among the names currently attracting attention is Rupesh Pandey, a businessman and social worker from Champaran, Bihar, who is now preparing to step into active politics.

Rupesh Pandey is reportedly making strong efforts to contest one of the 17 Legislative Council seats on an NDA ticket. Known for his work in the banking sector and his social initiatives, Rupesh has gained recognition as a businessman with a growing public presence. Sources suggest that he is keen to work extensively for the youth of Bihar, particularly in the field of education and employment opportunities.

Apart from his business background, Rupesh Pandey has also been associated with various social welfare activities and is known for helping underprivileged sections of society. Political discussions indicate that the Bihar leadership is considering giving him a significant organizational or legislative responsibility in the near future.

At present, the NDA appears to hold a strong numerical advantage in the upcoming elections. Based on current calculations, the alliance is expected to comfortably secure nearly 10 out of the 11 seats likely to go to the ruling coalition. Meanwhile, Chirag Paswan-led Lok Janshakti Party (Ram Vilas) is also staking claim to a Legislative Council seat in return for its support in the Rajya Sabha elections through its 19 MLAs.

By-elections are also expected for the vacant BJP seat following the resignation of Mangal Pandey and the JDU seat vacated by Nitish Kumar. On the other hand, the opposition Grand Alliance currently appears numerically weaker. Including support from AIMIM and BSP legislators, the alliance has approximately 41 MLAs, enough to comfortably secure only one seat. Winning a second seat would require the support of at least nine additional MLAs.

As political negotiations continue behind closed doors, all eyes are now on whether Rupesh Pandey will officially emerge as an NDA-backed candidate in the Bihar Legislative Council elections.
