Udaipur | The National Service Scheme (NSS) Special Camp at Guru Nanak Girls Postgraduate College, Udaipur was inaugurated with a de-addiction campaign. On the first day, during the inaugural session, an awareness lecture was organized on the theme *“Addiction: A Silent Killer Affecting the Future Generation.”*
On this occasion, Dr. P. C. Jain, associated with water conservation and the de-addiction movement, addressed the NSS volunteers under the *Nasha Mukti Sangram Abhiyan*. The students read out news reports related to addiction published in various newspapers and appealed to people from all sections of society to join the de-addiction campaign.
In his address, Dr. Jain highlighted the harmful effects of pan masala, explaining that it contains nearly 80 percent areca nut, which when combined with tobacco can cause cancer of the mouth, throat, and stomach. He described its impact as that of a slow “silent killer.” He also referred to excessive screen time as a form of addiction and stated that overuse of mobile phones and laptops during pregnancy can lead to learning difficulties, poor mathematical ability, and hyperactive behavior in children.
Through his presentation, Dr. Jain explained the comparative effects of alcohol, opium, cannabis, tobacco, and drugs on men and women, emphasizing that due to their physiological structure, the impact of addiction is more severe on women. He also pointed out that nicotine reaches a smoking mother’s breast milk, increasing the likelihood of tobacco addiction in children later in life.
In the second session of the first day, the students presented a powerful street play titled *“Death on the Road,”* portraying the tragic consequences of alcohol abuse that led to the death of a family’s only son. The play conveyed a strong message that addiction should not become the cause of untimely death of a mother’s son, a sister’s brother, or a wife’s husband.
The NSS cadets took a pledge to spread the message of “Say No to Addiction” and “Addiction is a disease and it can be treated” from door to door. Program In-charge Dr. Anita Paliwal introduced Dr. P. C. Jain and stated that the college students would always remain actively associated with the de-addiction campaign. Slogans, dance, and song performances promoting de-addiction were also presented on this occasion.
College Principal Prof. Anil Kothari welcomed Dr. P. C. Jain and reaffirmed the continuous support of Guru Nanak Girls P.G. College towards the de-addiction campaign.
The street play featured performances by Charvi Dharwal, Mahima Swarnakar, Kinjal Jangid, Yashika Sharma, Vidhi Baniyara, Kritika Joshi, and Tanisha Patel. The program concluded with a de-addiction pledge taken by the speakers and students, followed by a vote of thanks presented by NSS volunteer Chhavi Chaudhary.
