Gandhiji’s Philosophy: A Nation’s Greatness Is Measured by Its Treatment of Animals

Udaipur. On the death anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi, tributes were paid to him at the Government Animal Husbandry Training Institute. On this occasion, a seminar was organized in which Joint Director of the institute, Dr. Surendra Chhangani, shared his thoughts on Gandhiji’s philosophy of life and his principles of truth, non-violence, and compassion.

Dr. Chhangani stated that Mahatma Gandhi was a true symbol of animal welfare, compassion, and humanity, and that his ideas continue to guide society in the right direction even today. During the program, students, officers, and staff of the institute sang Ramdhun *“Raghupati Raghav Raja Ram”* and Gandhiji’s favorite bhajan *“Vaishnav Jan To Tene Kahiye.”*

Speaking about Gandhiji’s ideals, Dr. Chhangani emphasized love for animals, animal welfare, compassion, kindness, and empathy as core values. He recalled Gandhiji’s message that the greatness of any nation can be judged by the way it treats its animals. Highlighting Gandhiji’s views on rural self-reliance, he said that Gandhiji promoted goat rearing as a means to strengthen the economic condition of the poor, especially considering the utility of cows and goats owned by economically weaker sections. He added that even with limited capital, individuals can earn a livelihood through goat farming. Gandhiji also advocated the regular consumption of goat milk due to its nutritional value.

On this occasion, Dr. Padma Meel provided detailed information on Gandhiji’s statements related to animal husbandry and said that Gandhiji’s entire life was marked by simplicity and high moral values. Even today, the world recognizes the importance of the ethical and non-violent teachings given by Mahatma Gandhi.

Students of the Animal Husbandry Diploma program also shared their views during the seminar. The program was conducted by Dr. Omprakash Sahu, who also gave a detailed account of Gandhiji’s life and contributions.
