Swiss Farmers’ Delegation Visits University’s College of Agriculture, Appreciates Its Work

Udaipur: In a bid to promote agri-tourism in southern Rajasthan, Rajasthan University hosted a delegation of 20 farmers from Switzerland, who conducted an academic and practical visit to the School of Agricultural Sciences.

Vice-Chancellor Prof. S.S. Sarangdevot explained that this visit is part of the university’s broader initiative to connect foreign farmers and experts with Indian agricultural systems, research, and extension services while promoting agri-tourism. During the visit, the Swiss delegation closely observed various departments of the agricultural college, state-of-the-art laboratories, agronomy farms, orchards, and integrated livestock production units.

The primary objective of the visit was to provide the Swiss farmers with an in-depth understanding of Indian agriculture, dairy farming, and local rural culture. The delegation particularly appreciated the efforts of the School of Agricultural Sciences in disseminating advanced agricultural techniques to local farmers through extension services.

Prof. Sarangdevot noted that the extensive use of chemical fertilizers for higher yields is causing new health issues among the general population. He emphasized the need to return to traditional farming methods while integrating them with modern practices. Many farmers, facing high costs and low profits in traditional farming, are adopting modern techniques such as polyhouse vegetable cultivation, which has helped them increase income.

The visit began with a warm welcome from Dean Prof. Gajendra Mathur, who introduced the Swiss delegation to the university’s vision for agricultural education and research. Subsequently, Prof. Inderjit Mathur provided detailed information about the university, the College of Agriculture, its departments, academic programs, and research activities.

Dr. Saurabh Rathore guided the Swiss farmers through the agricultural farm, addressing their questions related to Indian farming practices, crop production, dairy farming, and integrated farming models. The visitors showed particular interest in the **Kadaknath (black meat) chicken breed** and praised the college’s efforts to conserve and promote indigenous livestock and poultry breeds.

This visit strengthened international engagement and showcased Rajasthan University’s commitment to sustainable agriculture and rural development.
