Vedant Udaipur World Music Festival Showcases a Unique Blend of Western and Indian Folk Culture

Udaipur: The Vedant Udaipur World Music Festival, conceptualized by SAHAR, was grandly hosted by Maharana Mewar Public School, The City Palace, Udaipur. The musical evening offered music enthusiasts and students a chance to witness an unforgettable confluence of global and Indian folk traditions.
At the start of the program, School Director Satish Kumar Sharma warmly welcomed and felicitated the artists of the Tamil folk-rock band Grader Nord (9 Degrees North) from Bergen, Norway—including Meera Tiruchelvam (flute), Deepa Tiruchelvam (vocals), Lars Andreas Forthun, Marius Lai, Jacob Sisselson Hamre, and Jacob Sonesin.
The performance’s highlight was the extraordinary fusion of Western and traditional cultural instruments. While the energetic guitars and modern rhythms of rock music electrified the students, the melodious flute and deep beats of the cajon connected the audience to Indian and Tamil folk traditions.
Under the leadership of sisters Meera and Deepa Tiruchelvam, the band brought their Sri Lankan Tamil cultural heritage to life on stage. Their socially conscious songs introduced students to cultural diversity, human values, and the transformative power of music.
On the occasion, SAHAR Founder and Festival Director Sanjeev Bhargav remembered the late Maharana Arvind Singh Mewar, saying, “His visionary thinking, rich tradition of art preservation, and commitment to cultural heritage continue to guide and inspire this festival.”
Director Sharma expressed heartfelt gratitude to the distinguished guests and SAHAR, describing the performance as highly inspiring for students. He added, “Events like these not only broaden understanding of global cultures but also strengthen mutual respect, understanding, and unity.” The festival presentation was a unique confluence of music, message, and energy, leaving lasting memories for all present.
The program concluded with an interactive session, where the artists shared their experiences and inspired students with stories from their musical journey. The event was efficiently conducted by school student Amina Sabunwala.
