Expansion of Facilities in the Nephrology Department of RNT Medical College

Udaipur: The Nephrology Department of Ravindranath Tagore Medical College has successfully carried out Continuous Ambulatory Peritoneal Dialysis (CAPD) for the first time for kidney patients in the division. With the introduction of this advanced procedure, patients suffering from severe kidney diseases will no longer need to make repeated hospital visits or wait in long queues for dialysis treatment.

Head of the Department and Professor Dr. Pankaj Beniwal said that CAPD is an advanced dialysis method that allows patients to perform dialysis at home either independently or with the help of family members. In this procedure, a special catheter is inserted into the patient’s abdomen through which dialysis fluid is introduced. The fluid absorbs toxins and excess water from the body and removes them safely.

After proper training, patients can perform dialysis at their convenience in the safety of their homes without depending on hospital facilities.

A Lifesaving Technique for Special Categories of Patients

This technology is expected to be particularly beneficial for kidney patients:

Whose blood pressure drops critically during regular hemodialysis
Who face severe difficulty in creating vascular access for dialysis
Who suffer from serious heart diseases
Who live in remote rural areas and cannot regularly travel to dialysis centers
Benefit Extended to Pediatric Patients and a 21-Year-Old Woman

The procedure was successfully performed on a 21-year-old woman suffering from chronic kidney disease. She had been undergoing regular hemodialysis for the past three months, but her blood pressure remained unstable during treatment, and she faced serious dialysis access complications.

Considering these medical complexities, doctors opted for the CAPD procedure. The patient will now be able to perform dialysis at home without visiting the hospital regularly, saving both time and travel expenses while enabling her to live a more independent life.

Importantly, the entire treatment facility has been provided completely free of cost under the Chief Minister Ayushman Arogya Yojana.

Principal and Controller of RNT Medical College, Dr. Rahul Jain congratulated the Nephrology team on this achievement. He stated that the institution’s objective has always been to provide world-class healthcare services to patients even in the remotest parts of the division.

He added that the successful launch of CAPD is part of this commitment and will especially benefit poor patients from rural and tribal areas who were forced to repeatedly travel to cities for dialysis treatment, bearing both financial and physical hardships. He emphasized that the institution’s priority is to provide the best possible treatment without imposing any financial burden on patients.

Expert Team Behind the Successful Procedure

The procedure was conducted under the expert supervision of Professor Dr. Pankaj Beniwal and technical guidance from Assistant Professors Dr. Harsha Makhija and Dr. Jaydeep Raj Damor.

Resident doctors Dr. Apoorva Parmar, Dr. Aswathy Joseph, Dr. Sumesh Nirwan, Dr. Yogesh Tanwar, and Dr. Uttam Roy actively assisted in the complex procedure.

Additionally, CAPD Coordinator Aditya Pancholi and dedicated staff members Bhagwati and Vijender played important roles in ensuring smooth coordination and execution.

Super Specialty Hospital Superintendent Dr. Vipin Mathur praised the technological advancement and said that the successful launch of CAPD services in the Super Specialty Block marks a major medical achievement for the institution.

He stated that this technology would prove to be a game-changer for critical patients who are unable to undergo regular hemodialysis due to severe cardiac conditions or vascular complications. He added that the institution’s focus is not only on providing excellent treatment within the hospital but also on improving patients’ quality of life. Home-based dialysis, he said, will offer patients greater independence and emotional support.
