'Curating Udaipur: A Course in Museum Studies' Launched in Udaipur

Udaipur: A ten-day training programme, "Curating Udaipur: A Course in Museum Studies," jointly organized by the Rajasthani Language Academy and the Maharana Mewar Charitable Foundation (MMCF), was inaugurated at the historic Khush Mahal in the City Palace, Udaipur. The programme will run until July 22, 2026.

Held under the guidance of Dr. Lakshyaraj Singh Mewar, Chairman and Managing Trustee of MMCF, the initiative aims to promote and preserve the languages spoken across Rajasthan while strengthening awareness of the state's cultural identity and traditions. The programme also seeks to equip participants with a comprehensive understanding of museum studies, heritage conservation, and museum management.

The curriculum focuses on Udaipur's rich cultural and historical legacy, featuring expert lectures and practical sessions on topics such as the Mewar school of painting, palace architecture, tangible cultural heritage, religious heritage, museum curation, and digital heritage preservation.

According to Dr. Mayank Gupta, Chief Executive Officer of MMCF, 56 participants are attending the course. They will receive academic and hands-on training in museum operations, heritage documentation, conservation, interpretation, and contemporary museum practices.

On the inaugural day, Professor Hayley Neal Swanson from London delivered a lecture on Udaipur's museum architecture and its relationship with the city's natural and built environment. She also introduced participants to a certificate course in museum studies and heritage practice. The day concluded with a guided tour of the City Palace Museum, led by Vishesh Kothari, Trustee of the Academy, offering participants valuable insights into museum collections, interpretation, and heritage management.

The programme reflects MMCF's longstanding commitment to preserving and promoting Mewar's rich cultural heritage while creating meaningful learning opportunities for researchers, museum professionals, students, and heritage enthusiasts.
