Water Values and Water Monitors: Instilling Water Conservation Habits Among Students

Udaipur: "The values instilled during childhood stay with us throughout life," said Dr. P. C. Jain, a Water Friend (Jal Mitra), during a water conservation awareness programme held at Pandit Khemraj Government Upper Primary School, Ayad, located opposite the Ayad Museum on the main road.

The programme began with a demonstration of the Rooftop Rainwater Harvesting System installed by the Shri Hastimal Bafna Charitable Trust. Dr. Jain explained the working of the system and gave practical training to the student Water Monitors on its operation and maintenance.

Later, through informative videos presented in the classroom, Dr. Jain explained the responsibilities and role of Water Monitors in promoting water conservation within the school and the community. Students also enthusiastically sang the water conservation song, "Today or Tomorrow, Without Water Life Will Perish; Water is the Elixir of Life."

As part of the awareness activity, coconuts were distributed to the students. Dr. Jain demonstrated how coconut husks can be spread around potted plants as mulch to reduce water evaporation, thereby conserving moisture and saving water.

An eco-friendly utensil cleaning soap made from ash and lemon was also distributed. Dr. Jain explained that this natural cleanser causes less water pollution, allowing the used water to be safely reused for watering plants.

Following the session, the newly appointed Water Monitors visited their respective classrooms and shared the knowledge they had gained with other students, helping spread awareness about water conservation across the school.

All teachers present also received hands-on training on operating the Rooftop Rainwater Harvesting System.

At the conclusion of the programme, all Water Monitors were presented with coconuts and eco-friendly cleaning soap.

The students appointed as Water Monitors were Khush Paliwal, Bariya Kartik, Mayuri Suryavanshi, Dolly Sahu, Kamlesh, and Mohammed Anas.

Headmistress Manju Pokarna delivered the vote of thanks, while Anita Dudani, Coordinator of the Water Monitors Programme, conducted the proceedings of the event.
