Meaningful Efforts Needed to Reduce Road Accidents: District Collector

Udaipur: A meeting of the District Road Safety Committee was held on Tuesday at the Collectorate auditorium under the chairmanship of District Collector Mr. Namit Mehta. The meeting focused on curbing road accidents in the district and ensuring smooth traffic management.
At the outset, Superintending Engineer, PWD and Member Secretary of the Committee, Mr. Abhinandan Jain, presented the compliance report of the decisions taken in the previous meeting. Expressing concern over the rising number of road accidents, the District Collector emphasized the need for collective and effective efforts to reduce them. He directed officials to analyze accident data through iRAD, identify black spots on a monthly basis, and implement necessary road engineering measures at such locations to prevent recurrence of accidents.
Speed Limit of 30 kmph on Fatehsagar Ring Road
During the meeting, it was highlighted that some motorists were driving at high speeds on the Fatehsagar Ring Road, causing inconvenience and safety risks for pedestrians. Taking serious note of this, the District Collector directed that a speed limit of 30 kmph be imposed on the Fatehsagar Ring Road. The Transport Officer was instructed to install signboards at appropriate locations and initiate legal action against violators.
Fatehsagar Pal to be Declared No-Vehicle Zone on Pilot Basis
The issue of traffic congestion and inconvenience to the public due to heavy vehicular movement on the Fatehsagar Pal during evening hours was also discussed. In response, the District Collector directed that, as a pilot project, the stretch from Motimagri to the Overflow Point be declared a no-vehicle zone for a few hours on weekends.
Other Key Points Discussed
Considering traffic issues in the inner city, discussions were held on declaring no-vehicle zones, one-way routes, and parking facilities. The responsibility was assigned to the committee formed earlier under the leadership of the ADM City, comprising officials from the Municipal Corporation, UDA, and the Tourism Department. The committee will identify areas requiring no-vehicle zones, one-way systems, parking arrangements, and pencil divider zones, and ensure proper implementation.
Additionally, feedback on the AI-based traffic light system installed at Fatehpura Circle under a pilot project was reviewed, and the Police Department was directed to submit a detailed report.
The meeting was attended by ADM City Mr. Jitendra Ojha, UDA Commissioner Mr. Rahul Jain, Municipal Corporation Commissioner Mr. Abhishek Khanna, Additional Superintendent of Police Mr. Umesh Ojha, along with officials from various departments.
