PIMS Hospital Doctors Give New Life to Newborn: Rare Surgery Successfully Performed on a 1.8 kg Premature Baby

Udaipur – The Department of Pediatric Surgery at Pacific Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS), Umarda, has once again demonstrated excellence in the medical field. Doctors at the hospital successfully performed a highly complex surgery on a premature newborn weighing just 1.8 kg, giving the child a new lease on life.

What Was the Serious Condition?
The baby, born to a family from Jagat (Udaipur) at PIMS Hospital, was diagnosed immediately after birth with a severe condition in which the food pipe (esophagus) was not properly developed and was abnormally connected to the windpipe (trachea). This rare congenital disorder is known as Tracheoesophageal Fistula, which occurs in approximately 1 out of every 3,000 to 4,000 newborns.

A Highly Complex 3-Hour Surgery
Pediatric surgeon Dr. Atul Mishra explained that the baby’s extremely low weight (1.8 kg) and premature birth made the surgery particularly challenging. Despite these difficulties, the medical team successfully completed the delicate operation over a period of about three hours. The esophagus was separated from the trachea and properly reconstructed. The baby is now completely healthy and has been discharged from the hospital.

Dr. Mishra noted that such surgeries are routinely performed at PIMS, but given the complexities involved in this case, the success marks a significant achievement for the entire team.

Key Contributors to the Surgery
The successful procedure and treatment involved a dedicated team, including pediatric specialists Dr. Vivek Parashar and Dr. Rahul Khatri. From the anesthesia department, Dr. Pinu, Dr. Sakshi, and Dr. Kamlesh Kanwar played crucial roles. Nursing staff members Reshma, Arun, Ashok, Rahul, Shiv, and Deepak also contributed significantly.

Free Treatment Under Government Scheme
PIMS Chairman Ashish Agrawal congratulated the entire team on this remarkable success. He informed that the complete treatment of the child was provided free of cost under the state government’s Janani Suraksha Yojana. He also reiterated that PIMS Hospital, Umarda, is equipped with modern and advanced medical facilities and continues to make significant contributions to healthcare services in the Udaipur region.
