Udaipur: Udaipur may be celebrated across the world for its lakes, heritage and tourism, but behind the postcard-perfect image lies a basic civic challenge that continues to affect women every day — the lack of clean, safe and usable public toilets.

Taking up the issue, Mewar Bachao Manch has launched a new social campaign to spotlight the condition of public toilets across the city and push for meaningful administrative action.

As part of the initiative, volunteers are visiting public locations, inspecting toilet facilities and documenting their actual condition through video recordings. The aim is to move beyond complaints and place clear, on-ground evidence before the concerned authorities.

Mewar Bachao Manch founder Abhishek Pandey said clean and safe public toilets are not a luxury but an essential civic facility, particularly for women, children, senior citizens and tourists.

“A city that welcomes tourists and celebrates development must also ensure basic dignity and hygiene for its citizens,” Pandey said, stressing the need for regular cleaning, maintenance, security and monitoring of public toilets.

The campaign is being led by Abhishek Pandey, Nidhi Gupta, Viniti Doshi, Chirag Meghwal, Deepesh Sharma and Dr. Madhu Nahar. The team is assessing facilities on parameters including cleanliness, maintenance, safety and usability. Locations where conditions are found to be poor are being documented so that the issues can be presented to the responsible departments with concrete evidence.

Dr. Madhu Nahar is also highlighting the connection between sanitation and public health. She said unhygienic toilets can create health concerns, while for women, access to clean and secure sanitation facilities is closely linked to health, comfort and dignity.

The campaign has also been given a public-participation focus during Raksha Bandhan with the message: “Women’s Call: Clean, Safe Toilets — Our Right.” Citizens are being encouraged to report poorly maintained public toilets so that such concerns can be brought to the attention of the authorities.

The initiative builds on the Manch’s earlier campaigns, including “Udaipur Ka Paisa Udaipur Mein” and “Udaipur Ne Thana Hai, Cyber Crime Ko Harana Hai.”

With this campaign, Mewar Bachao Manch is seeking to turn a frequently overlooked civic issue into a public conversation — because a truly modern and welcoming city is measured not only by its landmarks, but also by the dignity and basic facilities it provides to everyone.
