Successful Thulium Laser Surgery of a 218-Gram Prostate at Pacific Medical College

Udaipur: The combination of advanced medical technology and clinical expertise has once again delivered new life to a patient by successfully resolving a highly complex case. At Pacific Medical College & Hospital (PMCH), Bhilon Ka Bedla, a 68-year-old elderly patient with an abnormally enlarged prostate weighing 218 grams was successfully treated using Thulium Laser technology.
The surgery was performed by Urologist and Reconstructive Surgeon Dr. Hanumant Singh Rathore, with valuable contributions from Dr. Hardik Patel, the anesthesia team comprising Dr. Prakash Audichya, Dr. Anil, Dr. Priyanshi, and support from Dr. Govind, Ghanshyam, and Chandramohan.
The patient had been suffering for a long time from severe urinary obstruction and blood in urine. His family had earlier consulted reputed hospitals in Ahmedabad, where surgery was attempted. However, due to the extremely large size of the prostate and excessive bleeding during the procedure, the surgery could not be completed successfully. Disheartened, the family brought the patient to Udaipur and consulted Dr. Hanumant Singh Rathore at PMCH.
Dr. Rathore explained that when the patient arrived at PMCH, his condition was extremely painful and distressing. Investigations revealed that the prostate size exceeded 200 grams, measuring approximately 218 grams. Performing conventional surgery (open surgery or traditional endoscopic techniques) in such cases carries a high risk due to difficulty in controlling bleeding.
Considering the complexity of the case, Thulium Laser technology was selected. The entire procedure was completed successfully within just one hour. Using laser assistance, the enlarged prostate was removed with minimal blood loss and no complications. Following the surgery, the patient recovered well and has now been discharged in stable condition.
Why Laser Technology Is Ideal for Large Prostates
Dr. Hanumant Singh Rathore stated that laser surgery is the most effective and safest option for patients with large prostate sizes. The major advantages of this technique include negligible bleeding, minimal risk of infection, shorter operative time, and faster recovery. While conventional surgery poses significant risks in such cases, laser surgery enables precise and safe treatment.
It is noteworthy that Dr. Rathore has performed more than 350 laser prostate surgeries over the past five years, many involving prostates larger than 100 grams.
Congratulating the medical team, PMCH Chairman Shri Rahul Agrawal stated that the institution is committed to providing world-class, advanced medical facilities and expert care under one roof for patients of Southern Rajasthan. With modern technologies like Thulium Laser, even the most complex prostate cases can now be treated effectively at PMCH.
